PSHE is a non-statutory subject, but can encompass many areas of study. At Broadmayne First School we have a PSHE policy (non-statutory) and also a Relationship Education policy (SRE) which is statutory.
PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education. It is closely linked with other subjects such as RE and Science and builds on statutory content outlined in the national curriculum along with statutory guidance on drug education, financial education and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.
Intent
At Broadmayne First School we believe that PSHE helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives. We aim for them to become informed, active and responsible citizens, both now and in the future - an important and necessary part of all children' s education.
We intend to equip pupils with a sound understanding of age appropriate risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.
At Broadmayne everyone is encouraged and supported to achieve their personal best and Fly High. Our school is welcoming, inclusive, has a real community feel and is a place where everyone is valued and respected.
Our pupils and staff treat each other equitably, fairly, with kindness and with mutual respect. At all times, staff and pupils are encouraged to show a high regard for the needs and feelings of others through their actions and words. The needs and interests of all pupils, irrespective of gender, culture, ability or aptitude, are promoted through our PSHE offer.
Our intent is to prepare pupils to be thoughtful, mindful citizens who can engage respectfully with different perspectives and contribute positively to their communities. We ensure that they also have a good understanding of both mental and physical health, how to keep safe and know how to seek support, and support others, when needed.
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum is taught by class teachers every week during a dedicated timetabled session. Alongside these weekly sessions, the values and principles from the PSHE curriculum are reflected and embedded across the school day, in assemblies and through our school values of Safe, Kind and Respect.
Broadmayne is a HeartSmart School. HeartSmart is a creative approach to build character, emotional health and resilience in children. It aims to equip children with the foundational principles and skills that will improve their mental health, relationships and achievement. Alongside this, we use a range of other resources from the PSHE Association and other reputable organisations.
Key features of our implementation include structured progression. Lessons build on prior knowledge and deepen understanding year by year through revisiting themes and concepts in a spiral curriculum.
As part of our PSHE education, British Values are valued and regularly referred to where appropriate and necessary through the whole school. Protected characteristics are also an important element and the children are encouraged to recognise their significance from an early age. The children are also aware of their Rights and we are working towards a ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ accreditation.
We assess impact through pupil voice, end of unit reviews, classroom dialogue, and ongoing teacher observation. Our aim is for every child to leave Broadmayne with a deeper understanding of themselves, their community and their place within it.
