The intention of the MFL curriculum at Broadmayne First School is to encourage an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and engaging. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language through planning links to develop their wider awareness and understanding of the cultural similarities and differences of other countries. At Broadmayne the children learn French as their modern foreign language, chosen as a country close to our part of the UK and one children are likely to visit.
We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.
Our MFL curriculum is based on the Catherine Cheater scheme of work. This scheme is designed to immerse children in the French language and culture using songs, rhymes and games, and activities which progressively develop children skills in the language, through regular lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary. The scheme ensures coverage and progression across our school in KS2. All our children in KS2 have regular language lessons.
We believe strongly that learning another language directly contributes to building our children's cultural capital, and the immersion in the French language and culture enables our children to set their ambitions high for the future, both for their move to middle school where they will build on these skills, and for their future adult life.
